| Monday, November 26 2007 - Title sponsor for the 2007 AGSI Canadian Cross Country Championships to provide funding for Canadian Cross-Country Team |
|
GuelphRunning.ca is pleased to announce that AGSI, (Angus GeoSolutions Inc.) will be providing the Canadian Cross Country team with $8000.00 in national team funding. This is on top of the generous contribution towards the operating costs of running a National Championship. The Canadian Cross-Country team, which will compete at the 2008 World Cross Country championships in Edinburgh, Scotland, is a self-funded team. That means the athletes will have to pay to represent Canada at the World championships. The national team funding from AGSI will greatly reduce the costs for each athlete.
The Canadian team is chosen by finishing places at the 2007 AGSI National Cross country Championships in Guelph, Ontario on Decmeber 1st. The first six eligible competitors from each of the four championship races will be named to the Canadian squad. The reality is that in recent years many of the top six finishers from the senior races have opted not to participate at the major championships due to the financial burden of self funded teams. In fact, senior teams have seen as few as one athlete from the top 10 at the national championship actually participate on the national team.
This is where AGSI, the Georgetown, Ontario solutions company comes in. More specifically, AGSI provides geo-spatial expertise via the integration of mapping science technologies and, development of Enterprise Geographical Information Systems. Chris Cameron, CEO and President of AGSI, is a runner who competed for the University of Guelph’s Cross country and track teams in the mid eighties. He is very excited to support the national championship and lend a hand to the runners who will compete on the national team next winter. “It’s great to see someone who is involved with running give back to the sport” says Dave Scott-Thomas, race director of the AGSI Championships and head cross country and track coach at the University of Guelph. Scott-Thomas adds, “To my knowledge this is the first time a corporate sponsor has stepped-up to cover costs for athletes on the Canadian Cross Country team.”
The lack of funding in Canadian Amateur sport has been a hot topic for many years and the sport of Cross Country has not been immune to cut backs. In general, a good team performance at a Championship event warrants greater funding, whereas a poor performance earns less funding for future teams. When athletes have to give up their spots on the national team due to financial reasons it weakens the team and sets in motion a downward spiral. If Canada could send the first six athletes across the line at the Canadian Cross Country championships it would be sending a much stronger team. For this potential to come into fruition the costs of going to a continental or world championship have to be reduced and with the initiative of AGSI this possibility is becoming a reality.

Brendan Hunt 17th and David Sharrat 21st provided solid backup in their first XC races with the River this season.
Impressive results came out of the Junior Boys 8km race from Speed River and NEC athletes. Leading the way was Allan Brett in 2nd (Ottawa Lions) followed by Rob Jackson in 3rd and Tommy Mosher in 6th.
Speed River had two athletes see action in the Juvenile girls race. Melissa Adam and Anna Bishop finished 47th and 49th respectively in a competitive Juvenile Girls 4km race.
